On the
occasion of the UN- Summit on Social Development (March 1995) a spherical globe,
15 meters in diameter, was erected in the centre of Copenhagen with the help of
delegates from every corner of the earth. Probably, it is the first time that
the people of the world could join their efforts and build such a structure.
Like The
Great Arch the globe is conceived after Erik Reitzel’s theories of a
correlation between rupture and form. At first sight there is a familiarity
between The Symbolic Globe and the lift tower of The Great Arch. Both
constructions obtain their lightness thanks to pre- stressed cables.
Since
1995 The Symbolic Globe has been situated on the piazza of UNESCO at Paris,
surrounded by the flags of all nations, signalling that this is the headquarters
of the international organisation.
