Réconstruction of a Building from the Viking Age

During the excavations of the four Viking ring- forts in Denmark remnants of building foundations were discovered.

The firm Erik Reitzel has studied the sites and has concluded that, probably, the roof structures of these buildings were structures of tents. The conclusion accords with the fact that nothing is left of solid elements of roof constructions.

The tent theory is sustained by written sources, particularly the Islandic sagas and the writings of Abbon, a monk who witnessed the siege of Paris by the Vikings in 885- 886.

The hypothesis has been supported by a reconstruction.
